AE86 Brakes

Front brakes:

The front brakes use typical single piston sliding calipers on cast iron disks. 13" wheels can be used. Models with the 4A-GEU (all in Switzerland) use a thicker vented disk and wider caliper to match. These brakes can be used to upgrade the lesser model, as the same hub is used. The same pads are also used.

Rear brakes:

The GT-Apex and GT-S models used disk brakes on the rear. The handbrake is incorporated into the caliper. Other models use drum brakes of either 8" or 9" in diameter.

Brake Master Cylinder:

A normal twin brake master cylinder is used. Its made from aluminium to save weight. It is identical to the unit used on TE72 vehicles, only aluminium. (TE72 unit is iron). All vehicles use the 13/16" size. Drum brake models have a proportioning valve mounted in the engine bay. This limits brake pressure to the rear brake to stop them locking before the front. This valve is not connected to the front brakes at all. The valve can be removed when changing to disk brakes, or a adjustable proportioning valve can be used. The bolt hole spacing is the same as used on many other Toyotas (and some Nissans) making it easy to swap to a different size master cylinder.
