2T-G Spotters guide

includes 2T-GEU, 3T-GTEU

page updated 30/1/2004

This section is designed to be a historical guide, listing the generations and updates of the 2T-G engine. There is much I have to add yet so visit again. Toyota Part Numbers found on the head and other parts of 2T-G engines from different time periods. The most significant numbers will appear on the head, the pistons, and the EFI manifold. Other parts common to all 2T-G engines like the front timing cover may have -88220 even on later engines. This refers to the Toyota part number. The first part of the number says what sort it is, the second tells of the generation or year it was designed. eg, part number 11111-88220. 11111 means "2T-G cylinder head", and 88220 means "first generation 2TG part". The early 2T-G heads (88220, 88222) have a aluminium cover plate at the front. Latter heads have a different shape hole and a steel cover plate with the Yamaha name and symbol next to it. The later heads are often called "Yamaha head" but the early heads also had Yamaha design input. Note: Too many people get caught up refering to their latter model 2T-G as having the "Yamaha head", as if it was somehow better than the early ones. If you look at the two you will find very little difference, except for double valve springs. In modifyed form there is no difference bar the Yamaha name cast into the latter model heads. Often two versions where avaliable at the same time, with different compression ratios to be used with different fuel or emission standards. The lattest head (88262) has slightly different chambers in the head and piston tops, with the raised part of the piston to one side and not in the middle. I am not sure you can buy new pistons to suit.

294,000 2T-G engines where built. 141,000 18R-G engines where built.

Almost all of this info is directly related to the 18R-G engines also. 18R-G motors of the equivalvent year used the same cam cover design, emission gear, and carburettors to the 2T-G engines. There was even a 16 valve version of the 18R-G used for racing. But there was no turbo version of the 18R-G like the 3T-GTE.
